Room 18 - The New Classroom!
Posted by techkids on Monday, 10 August 2009

The New Classroom

Room 1 - or should I say Room 18 - has finally moved into their new classroom and has given Room 7 (now known as Room 1) their old classroom. The big move happened on the last week of school in Term 2. Our new classroom is a bit smaller but much warmer and not because winter is ending, but because we have a bigger heater and the same heater can be used as an air conditioner in the summer (very useful).

Our new classroom also has a deck around it so on a rainy day we can still eat outside. And for hand writing we now have a bigger white board to write on!

The only bad thing that I can think of is now the toilet is not right next to our classroom (annoying if you’re busting to go toilet) but other than that our class is almost perfection!

 ROOM 18!!!!!

Recently the year 6 students that used to be in Room 1 have moved to Room 18. Room 18 used to be at a school in Taupo. It was moved up here by truck and was then refurbished. We moved in on the first week of term three. It took us a week to move in.

We now have a brand new heat pump, brand new carpet and brand new hessian on the walls. We have our own new veranda and deck. Our class overlooks the whole school field. We have three white boards and an interactive board. We have a library area with a couch. Our classroom is smaller than Room 1. The hessian is lime green and dark blue. We have settled in and it feels like we’ve been in Room 18 all year. We really enjoy our class much better than our old class room.

ROOM 18!!!

I like Rm 18 because everyone is settled. We can see out the windows to the field and we can watch everyone doing fitness. On pet day we even saw the little dogs and animals.

I like my desk, because I’m right next to the window. Its cool, because we have got a  Heat Pump, so the classroom is warmer than our old classroom.

We’ve done Art, and on the wall, we’re putting up plates that we did painting on. The walls are lime green hessian carpet board and I like them.

I don’t miss anything about Rm 1, and I enjoy the carpeted deck with a roof on top just outside the room.

The location of the classroom is very good because we can hear everyone in the hall having fun. The Middle School kids seem to be yelling and doing cartwheels.

Inside our classroom we can’t see the teacher when she is sitting at her desk because she is behind us. She has all her stuff stacked up in front of her.

I’m glad we moved into Rm 18!

Bike Safety Week

 BIKE SAFETY!

In week 10 of Term 2 the Senior Syndicate participated in the Kids Can Ride Cycle Safety programme.

On day one we didn’t have to bring our bikes because we learnt our road rules and watched a video about a boy making bad choices on his bike. We learnt about Road Safety and how to make ourselves as safe as possible. We learnt our 1, 2, 4 helmet check and our ABC bike check - Air, Brakes and Chain.

On day two we had to bring our bikes. First we reviewed our road rules then Iris, Vanessa, Sam and Lucy took us onto the back field where they had set up an obstacle course for us to practise on.

On day three we went on the back field again to do another obstacle course where we practised our signals and stopping at white lines.

Then we were allowed on the road. We practised our left hand signals and going around parked cars. We had to wear high visibility vests and our helmets on the road.

On the last day we practised our right hand turns and roundabouts. We practised doing our lessons in Mayfield so it was pretty hard going up the hills.

After we had safely completed our course we all received our Safety Certificate.

Young Einsteins Competition
Posted by techkids on Wednesday, 1 July 2009

Last week we went to The Young Einstein’s Competition. It was at Matua School – the team was: Erin Conway, Haley Palmer, Luke Maxwell and Matthew Cooney.

As we were driving to Matua in Luke’s mum Megan’s car we were practising general knowledge with some flash cards form a game in Luke’s car. When we arrived we walked through the school to the hall - we went in and sat down at the table with our team name. We were Bethlehem One and the year fives were Bethlehem Two.

We were at the very back and the year fives were at the very front. As we sat down a man told us our instructions “in front of you there are nine sheets of paper, one for each round. You will need a writer - they will write the answers on the sheets” he said. “Each table has a runner who will take and bring things you need” he said. And the runner brought the pencil and the joker over. The joker was a card and if you played it for a round it doubled the points.

The first round was general and we played our joker - I told them not to but we still did. The questions were really weird though for example one was about how many McDonalds were in the Mt maunganui and Tauranga area so we didn’t do very well that round, but because of the joker we got twelve points and we were winning. The next six rounds were all boring but then at the seventh round it was really close - it was us then Otumoetai, then Matua. Then in the seventh round Otumoetai played their joker and they took the lead. But in the eighth round Matua played their joker and they took second place and that was the last round.

So in the end Otumoetai came first, then Matua, then it was us the last team to progress to the Western Bays. So we were happy in the end but a little annoyed. Hopefully we will do better at Western Bays. It was really fun.
