Long Vowels & the Magic Silent 'e's
Posted by Regan Scarfe on Friday, 19 March 2010

We've been learning about long vowels in words this week and about how the magic silent 'e' at the end of words helps us know that there's a long vowel sound. Part of our spelling for the week was a Chunky Challenge where we have to find as many words as we can that fit the rule/chunk that we are learning about. This week Cliona, Jack & Haritoa's team won. They got the most words written down in the four minutes we had to do our Chunky Challenge. They also got one of the longest words, nightingale. The image below shows all of the words Room 9 managed to write down in their Chunky Challenge groups this week. They all have a magic silent 'e' which tells people that there's a long vowel sound. We managed to get 129 different words!
